Creeper cake for my little bro

This is the latest cake I made which was for my little brother’s birthday.

I am not totally satisfied with the outcome but I was trying something new and considering that, it’s not so bad.

I knew for a while that I wanted to make him a Minecraft cake, the question was what to make and how. At first I wanted to attempt a dirt cube like the ones I had seen floating around online, but that required time and fondant, both of which I did not have.

Then I thought of a creeper cake and was actually contemplating attempting to make a large 3D standing creeper, but again I lacked the skills, time, and tools. So I decided to just make the face. I got the idea to make a buttercream transfer instead of trying to pipe on all the little squares. The idea was to make the top and all four sides and then glue them to the cake with buttercream.

This was actually did work, but since it was my first attempt doing something like this there were issues during the execution. The two main problems I had were that wherever the cake was uneven the icing started to cave in a bit, and the other problem was not getting a smooth finish on the squares which is what you should have with a transfer. I smoothed out everything as best as I could, but the cake still did not come out looking as clean as I wanted.

All and all, I don’t think it was too bad for a first attempt and it certainly was a learning experience.

The cake is a chocolate fudge cake with a peanut butter frosting filling, and the outside is a simple buttercream with the eyes and mouth being made from homemade marshmallow fondant.
