Description
After some prompting from my friend I am posting the only decent picture I snapped of the birthday cake I made for this past weekend.
She loves Half-Life so I had to of course attempt a Half-Life cake, because why the hell not.
About the cake:
1) The design is based on cake that came up when I was searching for references.
2) The cake is covered in Wilton fondant.
Yes, I know Wilton's fondant has mixed reviews about its taste, but I was desperate. The only store in town that sells fondant was, with my luck, out of anything but Wilton's, and when I asked they told me their next shipment would not be until the following week, which would be too late.
So I picked up a thing of Wilton's thinking it would be fine, I would make it work, and I did. I added a butt load of Almond extract to it which helped. However, I don't think I'll be buying it again anytime soon.
Anyway, back to the cake. as I said it's covered in fondant and it was the first time that I worked something other than MM fondant. It was tricky and a few curse words did fly along with a few shed tears of frustration, but over all it was not as hard as I thought it would be. I have to say I really look forward to working with something like Satin Ice for my next cake.
3) The headcrab and the crowbar are made from white modeling chocolate and then painted with a mixture of gel food coloring and almond extract/light corn-syrup.
I have to say this was the most fun part and my mother's continuous comments of "Ew that's so gross" just made it all the more enjoyable.
Overall it was a great learning expericne and I realized I find real joy making things like this. Because of that and the fact that I have gotten quite a few requests for cakes, I think I am going to invest in a few baking tools when I can.
I will be later posting close up pictures of the headcrab when I get them from
Enjoy!
