Hunger Games Cake

Here is the latest cake I made which was back in early June. This one was for my sister's 22nd birthday. It will be my last one for a while.

This was a simple lemon buttercream cake with a strawberry filling.  All the icing was my usual real butter buttercream icing. The mocking jay was white modeling chocolate which was painted in gold with a layer of gold glitter. The arrow was just a piece of spaghetti.

As usual, because of my in experience I ran into issues main of which was the fact that the mocking jay was supposed to be standing upright in the cake. However it became clear after I sculpted it that if I attempted that one of the mocking jay's wings would have snapped. Next time I'll try gum paste.

So anyway plan B was to cut the cake into the shape of a pedestal and lay the symbol on it. The next problem that arose was that the cake I had cut to make the angled piece started to shift a bit. It was not horrible, but it was enough to make the icing crack and bulge in places. Note to self, don't skip on using dowels in the future.

After that there were a few mishaps with the mocking jay but I was able to repair it well enough. Really because of the whole last minute design change it did not turn out as I would have liked and a lot of the elements look very slapped on to me.

Nonetheless, despite the heartache and near disasters I am satisfied with the cake, especialy the mocking jay.
